Hi, My name is Denis Lemire. I am the webmaster of The Space Quest Network, (http://www.freenet.edmonton.ab.ca/~lemire) just an average space quest fan page. Anyway I was wondering, if you guys would be intrested in doing an interview for my site, your probably very busy and everything but I thought I would give it a try, it would be pretty cool. Here's a couple of questions, if you don't have time to answer all or any of them no problem but here goes. Denis, First let me apologize for answering so late. When you sent this I was still recovering from a truck accident which attempted to reconfigure my body in not a good way. I'm much better now but somehow screwed up and didn't answer some of the accumulated email when I did return to work. Today, I decided to check through stuff and found this. By coincidence I was at your site for the very first time just yesterday.. Scott How did you guys get into programming. I was the programmer half of the team. Mark Crowe was the artist. Together we wrote the game and invented the characters and I took on the larger portion of the writing duties. We worked well together. How long have you been working for sierra As of March 1 1997, fourteen years. Yes, I'm old. (Really, really old.) What first gave you two the idea of Space Quest Mark and I both had had visions of making a sci-fi type game. I had tried to talk Ken into a space game about a year and a half before Mark and I started working on The Black Cauldron. In those very long hours and late nights doing things to keep Disney happy, we found out about our common interest. We'd been working on games that took themselves way too seriously. All main characters were pristine, noble and valiant (and probably virgins). They were personality-impaired to a high degree. We decided that people might like a change and that if we got to do it, we would be working on something we truly loved to do and that that in turn would translate into a game that adventure fans could really like. We didn't have any idea how many of you twisted folks are out there in the world. After the making of sq4, you guys claimed you wouldn't be making another space quest, what changed your mind. When we said that, we were both extremely burned-out from five years straight of churning out Space Quests so our frames of mind were very negative. Mark was tired enough to go to Dynamix where he could use his art and design skills to work in an entire new genre. SQ5 chased him up there however. I wasn't a good prospect at the time and Mark was able to do it in Eugene instead of down here. It took me a lot longer to be able to even entertain the thought of thinking about the possibility of working on another one. After a sufficient amount of time though I was able to like the idea again. We have some very talented and fun people here to work with which makes it even more fun. They're not allowed to be too serious or we can't use 'em. According to Ken Williams, Space Quest 7 is very possible, do you have any plans at all towards it. Yes. We have some ideas taking shape nicely. Right now we only have three people on the team. Leslie Balfour will be working with me on the creation of SQ7. Jay Lee is our Lead Programmer and tech guy who will help Leslie and I stay within the technological bounds of what we can actually do. You'll like what he's got in store for us. We need someone to hold our leashes. Believe me when I say that Leslie is as twisted as I am if not even more so, so he's got his hands full. Anyway, we're just getting into it and don't have any serious design tidbits to offer right now but we'll try to keep you informed as it evolves. Thanks, Denis Lemire Thanks, Denis. Once again, sorry for the huge delay. Keep up the good work on the website! Scott 4/11/97
